Illustrations for the Flitlit Introductory and Adventure Stories are the creation of award winning illustrator, James Field, with contributions by Eiry Rees Thomas and Matthew Harding.

Research undertaken during the pilot work undertaken highlighted a hiatus in provision for materials that address issues associated with an immediate leap from picture books to early chapter novels. Carefully chosen page by page illustrations are desired for certain groups at this intermediate level, especially for the considerable numbers of young readers identified as visual learners, of which there may be up to 60% in a classroom.

Highly visual books for such groups call for age-appropriate, superior illustrations which maximise visual perception.

Such reading materials lead to a juxtaposition where text and illustrations are interwoven. This offers pupils and educators many opportunities to discuss various interpretations of the stories.
